Upon discovering the delinquent debt, Emily knew that she could begin the process of establishing ownership over Laura.  She e-mailed the collections company and purchased their portion of Laura's liabilities, which amounted to nearly $ 2,000.  Now Laura owed Emily $ 600 for the bar tab, plus $ 1,100 for rent, plus the $ 2,000 from the collection agency.

Next, she had her employer's finance department contact Laura's current credit card company and offered to purchase the balance from her two remaining credit cards.  Realizing Emily's offer was the best chance they had of re-payment, the companies accepted.  Emily paid off the $ 4,000 balance in exchange for a certificate stating that she now was the official holder of Laura's credit card balances.  Using her access to Laura's credit card passwords, she canceled all of her roommate's lines of credit.  Laura now was legally indebted to Emily for $ 6,000 and unofficially owed her another $ 1,700. 

The only chance Laura had of paying off so much would be to get it from her parents.  Emily knew that the patience of her roommate's father was exhausted.  To ensure Laura's family would not come to her rescue, Emily accessed Laura's online account and forwarded several e-mails from the dean of Laura's university warning her that she faced expulsion for her poor grades.  Emily also forwarded some e-mails about a recent DUI arrest, and some others from an on-line marijuana vendor.  She made the e-mails look as though Laura had cc'd them to her father by accident, instead of sending them to her boyfriend Ron.  She knew that Laura was dumb enough to do such a thing, especially if she was drunk, so the ruse was completely believable.
