In archaic times, the most important day of the year in the Kingdom of Danubia was the September equinox, the day that the world officially began its descent into the death and despair of winter.  An important part of the ritual was the sacrifice that had to be made by one the town's leading families, which required them to surrender a marriageable daughter to the temple for a year.  The young woman's internment started when she was publicly stripped and given a switching in front of the town's entire population.  Her cries were considered an appeal to the Ancients to allow the town to survive another winter.  Her internment lasted a year, until the next sacrificial penitent was appointed.  During that time she remained naked as she assisted the Priests in their religious duties.
